Sports can be brutal.

That’s a quote from Bill Simmons, referring to the Boise State loss on Friday.

I am still in shock. I care less about sports than I ever have, now in my early 30s. The exception is Boise State football, something I’ve grown to love with somewhat rabid passion since my days in Idaho (2001-2003). Unfortunately, when you throw all of your sports passion into one bucket, you live and die by their success.

To say I’ve had it good would be an understatement. The Cinderellas of college football, winners of 25 in a row, plus two BCS wins and this year a top three ranking and a legitimate shot at the national championship. Of course, that disappeared after a overtime loss to Nevada, and in spectacular fashion at that. A successful hail mary followed by unsuccessful field goal tries.

That’s the season though. You don’t get the option of losing. I think that’s why it’s so tough for me to swallow. I’ve basically had to root for a team not to lose for the better part of two years. I can only imagine how much that must suck for them.  Now that it’s over, I’m not even sure where to begin. I would have liked to gone to the Rose Bowl, but maybe next year. There’s always next year.

I’m glad I still care about stuff like this. Honestly though, I could have waited til next season for that loss.
